The rollercoaster of self doubt

Life can take us on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and a common one for many women is self-doubt. For many of us, life can take us on bump ride with moments of absolute clarity that are quickly overshadowed by uncertainty. So today, let’s chat about some of the common self-doubt traps and providing a bit of a roadmap to overcome them.

Recognising the Patterns:

Self-doubt often wears different masks, making it a slippery sucker to catch but not impossible when you know how. It creeps into our thoughts, casting doubts on our abilities and worthiness. To break free from this soul sucking cycle, first we’ve got to  recognise these patterns.  

So let’s take a look at what some of them are. 

1. The Comparison Game:

The age-old trap of comparing ourselves to others is amplified in the current world we live in where social media constantly bombards us with everyone’s ‘highlight reel’.  And it can make it seem like everyone else is doing better than us and has their shit together, when in actual fact, nobody knows what they’re doing and we’re all just muddling through the best we can.

Comparisonitis just feeds self doubt. So if you want to shift the self doubt, then it’s time to let go of the comparison game. 

2. Perfectionism Paralysis:

The relentless pursuit of perfection can paralyse any progress. One of my favourite quotes in fact is: Progress over perfection. When we focus on progress and the little steps forward it helps us to move towards what we want.  Learning to embrace imperfection and even learn to love your unique flaws is the Express Route to greater self love, self worth and a big boost in confidence. 

3. Fear of Failure:

Failure is a natural part of growth and it’s the normal pathway to learning and figuring stuff out. Yet for the high achievers amongst us, the fear of failure can stop you from even having a go.

When we look at failure or making mistakes as normal and the pathway to learning and growing, then we get the opportunity to try new things knowing that failure is just a normal part of the process to doing it well and doing it right. 

So here’s what you need to do instead.

1. Embrace Vulnerability

Let’s clear it up right no –  vulnerability is not a weakness, in fact it’s the ultimate show of courage and strength. 

Being vulnerable by sharing about your challenges is the pathway to self love and acceptance, and greater more genuine connections with others and what a gift that is. 

Load Up On Self-Compassion

Self-compassion is the antidote to self-doubt. So it’s time to learn, play and practice the skill in being kinder and more compassionate with yourself, especially in those challenging moments when it can be easy to fall into the trap of self judgment and harsh criticism. 

Practice Positive Affirmations

Find and practice positive affirmations that really land in your heart.  Affirmations when done the right way, are a powerful tool for rewiring negative thought patterns. After all, our negative thought patterns are just thoughts that we’ve practiced over and over until we believed they were true.  It doesn’t make them true and that means you can undo those thoughts with more positive and empowering thoughts in the form of Daily Affirmations. 

Find the words that land with you and say them to yourself as many times daily – any time you look in the mirror, say it to yourself as you look into your eyes. Now, it’s important to say it like you mean it, because your subconscious mind is always listening.

That’s why it’s important to pick the words or phrases that feel comfortable to you right now. 

For example, you may not be able to say, I love myself, but you could say something like, I’m learning to love myself more and more each day.

Going on the journey of self-discovery requires real courage and commitment. By recognising and navigating the common self-doubt traps, you will pave the way for a more confident and empowered version of you. Remember, this is a continuous journey that never really ends and each step forward is something to be celebrated.  Keep going

Here’s some practical steps:

  1. Reflect: Take a moment now with pen and paper to reflect on your own self-doubt patterns. What do you notice you say to yourself out aloud, or just in your own mind. Self  awareness is the first step towards transformation.
  2. Practice Affirmations:  If nothing changes, nothing changes.  You have to do the work! So begin today by adding positive affirmations into your daily routine – when you’re in the shower, when you brush your teeth, any time you wash your hands or anything else you do frequently, add the affirmation to that activity. Small, consistent steps lead to big changes over time. 
  3. Connect: Share your journey with others. Everything is better with a squad behind you cheering you on. So why not join our community and connect with like-minded sisters on a similar path to you.
